PhD (LSE) Professor Pieter Vanhuysse is a Full Professor at the Department of Political Science and Public Management and the Danish Centre for Welfare Studies (DaWS) at SDU.

He is also founding Board Member of the Interdisciplinary Centre on Population Dynamics at the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences (CPOP-SAMF). He holds degrees from the University of Leuven (MA in economics; Certificate in philosophy) and the London School of Economics (MSc and PhD in government). Prior to joining SDU, he was Deputy Director and Director of Research at the European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and Research, a United Nations-affiliated thinktank in Vienna.

PUBLICATIONS:

Professor Pieter Vanhuysse has published widely in political sociology, political demography and political economy, focusing on welfare states, public policies, demographic change, sustainability and intergenerational relations and justice, and quality education and human capital (SDGs 4, 10, and 16). He has (co-)authored over 40 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and over 50 chapters, policy briefs and research reports. His book Divide and Pacify: Political Protests and Strategic Social Policies in Post-Communist Democracies (2006) was nominated for the Political Sociology Best Book Award by the American Sociological Association. He has also co-edited Aging Populations in Post-Industrial Democracies (2012) and Post-Communist Welfare Pathways (2009); a co-edited book on Global Political Demography is forthcoming in 2021.
