His research spans several areas in comparative politics and comparative political economy. One of his main research topics is how fiscal institutions, such as fiscal rules, impact national politics in both democratic and non-democratic countries. He also has a special interest in the political economy of elections including the study of political budget cycles.
In another strain of his research, he explores the effects of different political parties and interest organizations on public policies both at the comparative and subnational level. In his newest research agenda, he attempts to answer classic questions in political science using original historical data. These questions include the determinants of promotions in autocracies and the political impact of wealth inequality.
