The applications of optical microscopy are many going from imaging the structure of entire organisms to visualizing single molecules in a cell. The talk will present some of the ongoing work done at the Advanced Imaging Group on development and applications of advanced microscopies in the fields of drug delivery, cancer diagnostics and bio materials. In particular the focus will be on applications of Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED) and Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) microscopy.
Examples of our work will include a study of the action of liposomes as transdermal drug delivery systems in human skin. Here we use the combination of super resolution optical microscopy and raster image correlation spectroscopy (RICS) to study the mechanism of action of the liposomes. Results on SRS microscopy as a tool for fast label free cancer diagnostics will also be presented. As well as our recent work on the optical and mechanical properties of spider silk.
